Seed Distribution and Phenotypic Variation in Different Layers of a Cunninghamia Lanceolata Seed Orchard

The phenotypic characteristics of forest seeds are the basis germplasm innovation, genetic improvement, and biological research, they also reference for development seed orchards. In this study, we analyzed quantity characteristics, differentiation, variation patterns in three seed-bearing clones from different crown layers Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) orchard located Fujian Province, China. We divided into six according to height sunny shady sides, 14 five quality indexes, measured germination rate seeds. filled with tannin-like substance upper layer was low, but it high lower layer. highest middle sides. Values most traits tested differed significantly among layers. average value differentiation coefficient 81.16%, indicating that explained total variation. repeatability (R > 0.80), these highly heritable. cones varied 6.86% 129.51%. exhibited degrees correlation, weight, circumference, width, area can be used predict other traits. However, correlations between cone were not strong. Our results show when establishing a dwarfing orchard, distribution should considered, more selected as parents.
